I dont understand how people can sit and watch football 30+ times or whatever it is a season.
Its just the same match over and over again...
An hour and a half of your life gone... boringly...
And the wages are ridiculous.
Also, to your point about soldiers, i have a friend who is a soldier and lives a life of luxury, due to basically ZERO living costs. Flash new car: Audi. Lives to a great standard. Accomodation: Paid. Rations: Paid. etc, so many perks of being in the army. Good pension. Granted, low wages, but when you consider it is 99.5% disposable income, it is infact much much better than the wage of an average white collar worker.
However that point is offtopic. I do think football is ridiculous in quite a few contexts. But as long as people still watch it, bet on it, advertise through it, we're going to see continued $$$ thrown at these arguably talented people.

Another is that they get paid more than ANYONE else on the planet for simply kicking a ball around a rectangular piece of grass for 90 mins trying to get it between 2 posts and not letting men wearing short shorts take it from you.
I'm not saying its easy work, training and fitness and all that but the monkey faced fugly called Rooney just secured a whopping £250000 A WEEK deal. There are soldiers in constant firefights that earn just over £250 a week!
Anyone else feel the same way?
Oh and this isnt the place for the people who do like football, I will report posts about 'how great football is' to a moderator for spam. |
please don't assume it's everyone getting 250,000 a week, yes i agree that is bloody ridiciulous....but apart from the premier league etc....those in the championship and lower get significantly less like around £2000-8000 a game

But I doubt your soldier friend was expecting all that when he was a newbie/rookie/private whatever and was out in a foreign country killing other humans in a bid to keep our country safe. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that he's now got all that but my point was to the men and women who are out there now.
I just argued something similar to this on my facebook (to the point a few people deleted me lol) that a HUGE tax should be implemented by the government, I mean if you take 90% of his 250K it leaves him with 25K which is still more than enough to live on. The other £225000 could go towards making this country better, schools, hospitals etc. And thats just 1 person. Imagine if they taxed every footballer. This country would be great again.

Unholy Emperor watch the double posts....
you comparing a footballers wages to a solder is grossly unfair. how about we compare how much footballers earn compared to a music professional and actors/actresses for a change. or even musicians/actors/actresses/comedians/other entertainers compared to that of a soldier.
at the end of the day, sports are a medium of entertainment. what you guys think is 90 mins of life wasted, is someone elses father/son time.
soldiers are on the frontline. granted. but they chose to join the army. footballers are on millions. because they chose to be and worked for it.

SO?????
Nearly everyone who has a job, works ALL WEEK. So running around every day for a week warrants 100K+ wage packets? Come off it. There are soldiers who do TWICE the amount of running plus they have the additional weight of a grown man on them thanks to the equipment + weapons. And whilst they're out fighting for our country some little jerk offs are earning more than they could ever dream of. Its just not right.
Oh and if they don't play every week, they still get paid EVERY WEEK. Part of the contract and such......
And so what if they 'retire' at 35 they should bloody go to uni get a degree and contribute PROPERLY to the country they live in!!!!!!!! |
So according to you, the only valid contribution someone can give for a country is either killing or dying for it?
How do they not contribute properly? Do they not pay taxes, same as everyone else?
You dont like the sport, fine, it's not to everyone tastes. But the vitriol of your content makes you come across as some mouth-foaming, Daily Mail reading lunatic.
Wind your neck in.

I don't hate the footballers because of the wages (even though I do think they're grossly unfair and overinflated) same as I don't hate film stars, pop stars or other celebrities for those reasons.
The reason I hate some of them is that they can do things that most of us would be jailed for and get away with a greatly reduced punishment ... just because they are celebrities of one form or another.
As it happens, I do dislike professional football, I have done since the 1980s when it was ripped away from being a sport and turned into a business by a certain Alan Sugar's takeover of Spurs.
I do however like away matches ... and the further away from me they are, the better I like them.

What precisely defines it as the greatest sport ever? Or did you just pass off your own opinion as fact, without any reason or logic? And what makes you think we judge this sport on our own capabilities?
I personally dislike it on the grounds of what it actually is. 22 men running about with a ball trying to get it between some posts. That said, for some reason, millions of people around the world sit at home watching, sit in stadiums cheering and billions is spent on advertising. Where is the sense of perspective here? Football violence on account of fandom between two teams being controversial, throwing riots up and down countries around the world? Yeah, the people involved get paid a stupidly large quantity but that's not all that's wrong with the game. We ought to be looking at and judging the people who encourage such a game (yes, just a GAME) to get so out of proportion. Do we really have nothing better in our lives than watching other people make a lot of money doing what kids do in parks, then judge each other individually for supporting different groups of men, doing the exact same "job"? Of course, that's not the end of it. Every fan has a hero, a person they can put on a pedestal to worship because they have the physical capability of kicking a ball in front of lots of people. The international development of egos then makes these people think they deserve said huge quantities of money. I believe one footballer, Sepp Blatter, called a particular club holding onto one player who was being paid £120,000 a week, akin to "modern slavery". [citation]
Then comes the justification that they are skilled men, with great talent. Let's, once again, put this into perspective. Nuclear Holocaust happens and civilisation as we know it is wiped out. Many people survive and scramble out of the wreckage. A man arrives among them and proclaims to the survivors "Who amongst us is capable of building our homes, working in our hospitals and saving our lives, making our tools for agriculture, and teaching our children?" One man in the crowd stands forward. He is wearing the insignia of a bank on his chest. "I can kick a ball with pinpoint accuracy over a long distance, and I have siginificant control over it in close proximity. No-one is better than me." Around him, the huddled survivors whisper between them before one finally steps up and says, "So? You may have talents and great skill, but you are entirely worthless to society." He turns back to the group. "Quite frankly, I suggest we kill and eat him as he is pretty muscular with a great quantity of meat on him, and we have no food." *Enter bloodbath*
Admittedly, this is an extreme situation, but the perspective holds true. They are skilled and talented in comparisson to what exactly? Why do they deserve to be put on pedestals?

So by your standards, any form or art or sport is inherently without value?
Because if you apply your logic and scenario to any form of entertainment, art or sport, it holds true.
Musician? Sure that's just someone hitting a guitar (insert whichever instrument holds true for you) with their hand, anyone can do that. Why would people pay good money to go and watch that?
When the Nuclear Holocaust happens, will Maynard James Keenan and Billy Corgan be instrumental (pardon the pun) in rebuilding society? Will they work in the hospitals? Will they rebuild houses?
I enjoy watching football. I don't like the mob mentality of it, but people are tribalistic naturally. Religion, politics etc etc are all just forms of seeking identity and solace in herd mentality, the avid football fan is just an extension of that. I'm not saying it's right, i'm saying it's human nature.
As for football hooliganism, it's inexcusable, but let's be honest, people involved in that would be violent without football, it's just an excuse for smashing a particular person's head in, rather than just any random person on a Saturday night in town.
And yes, Sepp Blatter is entirely out of touch with reality, but i think most football fans would concur with that.
You don't like football, fair enough, not everyone's cup of tea. I can't stand cricket. But your argument, when applied to ANY area of sports/arts/entertainment strips life of joy. Without the heroes, the villains, the wins and the losses, life would lose a lot of it's romanticism.
PS. Your '22 men kicking a ball' reminded me a lot of Mrs Doyle.

Yes the wages of 'professional footballers' is ludricus, but don't judge something by a minority that get more than those below them.
I play once a week, and on a wednesday i bring my 4 year old daughter down to our local club where she is taught not just how to 'kick a ball around' but also social skill, mobility skills but also how to take instruction and has fun whilst doing it.
Straight after she finishes it is the turn of my 8 year old son to train, I also recently finished the 'kickstart' course which means I can also assist in the training.
during the hour they spend 40 - 45 minutes going through routines and drills designed to develop their multi-directional movement, agility, balance, co-ordination, speed, ball mastery, spatial awareness, and more importantly, their confidence and all this is done with enjoyment and fun.
They then finish with a quick 10 minute 'match'
He then goes through all this again at 9am on a saturday morning
football is not 'ALL' about the 400 players in the english premier league who earn from 20k to 250k per week, its about the grassroots players and our kids.
I'm sorry you don't like football but I guarantee that when you have kids of your own ( I am assuming you don't), your attitude will change when you bring them to their local club and you see them celebrating a goal scored by someone on their team or the pride you feel when they score one themselves
