First of all, you couldn't have lost a lifestone because upgrading items from Good to Good (+5) costs a heartstone for every level.
And it's your fault. Never use the Refresh or Back button in the Well of Souls, Auction and Training pages because it's easy to loose your items, stones and PoP this way. Every time you click the Refresh button your browser sends the same request, in your case it was upgrading the mace. The same goes for the Back button but it sends the same request you did on the previous page.
And it's not a proper complaint.
