didnt know where to put this, so here it is
ive noticed very few adverts for bloodwars, and most of them are mundane and easy to miss.
they are generally entirely text in a small area, often misspelt.
shouldnt they be a bit better than this to attract as many users as possible?

Yeah that really sucks. Needs more creativity and things. Let's do stuff like on lost.net where you put the link on balloons and stuff so people get attracted to it. Or at least use a picture

According to Szeszej the BW team don't want to pay the extra money for a graphic to be used, and thats why there isnt one.

It is simple:
1. Each line of ad must consist of no more than 35 signs.
2. There are 2 lines of text.
3. The ad have been changed.
4. The graphic ads are payed for the number of views (thus VERY expensive) the text ones are payed for ad clicks.

I barely even notice entirely text based adverts, and i know most others dont either.

Yes, you would get a lot of clicks with a graphic ad, but you would pay hundreds of times more than for a normal text ad because you pay for viewers, not for clickers...

The ads question is a moot point anyway, because until the game is made to appeal to a wider market it's not going to help in any realistic way. You can advertise across every media going with multi milloon pound/dollar adverts if you like, but if you don't have something that people want, they won't buy it.

thats the thing, it isn't ..... you're commenting on the quality of the adverts .... I've merely commented on the other side of it saying that the advertising is going to be ineffectual anyway, so the quality of the advertising is a moot point from the start

Ah; its a tough call - graphics cost when you're running with a small budget. Text is cheaper, but can be just as effective if you:
1) get the right copy (put some adjectives in there - make it tasty guys!) 
2) place the ad in the right locations
I found BW through a link on google (hawks & spits); but there are hundreds (thousands?) of browser based games out there to choose from - this one appealed. So it was pure chance.
Suggestion:- research your market (that's us) & place your ad in locations that will attract the kind of people who wanna play this game. 
(slinks away, after teaching granny to suck eggs & stating the bleeding obvious...)
