A vamp's tale Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

A little tale about my vamp and what happens to her. Loosely based around quests etc in the game. Dedicated to Neufreiha, poke and you shall receive darkling.

1) Genesis.

Velf moodily stared out of her cave at the sunshine. Living in the shadows all the time could even make a vampire depressed at times. Humans could be influenced by the climate and weather; the only way mortals could get certain vitamins was from the sun. Being a relatively young vampire Velf still remembered some of her human existence, before the nano-bots infected her blood. It was small wonder she still slightly envied the creatures that lived in the light.

There were still plenty of the little nanos about, programmed with a plague that was only meant to destroy one particular type of human. The race that was to be obliterated was not even remembered. The disease had jumped the genetics it was to be confined to and nearly killed off all humans.

Velf had been born long after that. She had lived in the mountain country; she had not really believed the vampires people spoke of actually existed. They were otherworldly creatures that ruled in the cities. It was all so very far away from her little village that followed the wild mountain goat herds.

The great plague was a thing of the past, the human race was recovering and Velf had grown up in a large family. Five brothers, that shared the red hair colour of their father and four sisters, all annoyingly blonde like Velf’s mother. Velf had had a different name then, one she did not remember anymore. Her sisters were all younger than her and teased her mercilessly about her red hair and strange forgotten name. Velf had liked her brothers better. All tall and strong, good herders... and they did not tease her about her small stature or funny name.

How could she have forgotten so much? It was only 500 years ago! But those memories were ancient history now. Even if her family had lived their bones would be dust in the village burial cave.

Velf knew she should have died the day the raiders came to the village. It was a bitter winter and the bandits were starving, making them fight ruthlessly to get at the villages salted meat reserves. Velf squeezed her eyes shut and tried to remember what had happened that night. But the memories slipped through her mental fingers like water. Only the odd image could be dredged up from her nano-bot damaged brain.

Her mother screaming as the men entered their yurt... fire, catching the rugs and woollen insulation... Her oldest brother, eyes glassy and staring, his mouth gaping desperately... trying to breathe through a throat that had been sliced open... hands grasping her, dragging her by the hair out into the snow... blood, the smell of blood back then made her stomach turn as did the smell of burning flesh. A rifle butt connected with the back of her skull and she blacked out...

The aftermath of the raid was much more clear. She awoke, bound, gagged and lying on her side next to a boy of her village, also bound. Velf remembered meeting the boy’s brown eyes and seeing her own terror reflected in them.

Her head was throbbing with pain and her stomach churned though it was empty. She remembered hearing the bandits discussing the fate of their kidnapped villagers. They were young enough to be sold to a brothel, both would fetch a good price. Velf almost bit through her tongue when she heard that. The only men she had ever really associated with were her brothers. She was only 14, barely of marriageable age. She wished she was dead, her family were all slaughtered, that she was sure of. She and the boy she lay next to had only survived because they had a value.

They were young enough to be sold into servitude in the cities, the younger a slave the better as an adult would put up more of a fight. But they were not so young as to be useless and have to be raised, they could be put to work immediately. Velf’s mother had warned her about the life of a brothel girl. Some women chose it as a career and could get rich from it, but most were forced into it. Velf’s mother had been terrified her daughters may be innocent enough to be lured to the cities with a promise of money and an easier life. Velf felt sick, the thought of bedding man after man, night after night filled her with horror.

She wanted to be sick but swallowed the stinging bile in her mouth. If she was sick with the gag on she would choke. Her fellow captive the village boy, was shaking from head to toe, but she could tell he was trying to be brave for her. He wiggled closer so he was pressed against her. Velf was freezing, the cave the bandits had chosen as a hideaway had layer of ice inside of it. It was melting under the two young people and the icy water was soaking into their clothes.

Velf hoped the cold would kill her.

The boy pressed himself against her more firmly, despite wishing for death Velf instinctively moved closer to the boy. He was warm. She buried her head in the crook of his neck and wept silently. Though he must have been petrified himself, the boy murmured unintelligible things to her through his gag. She could tell by his tone he was trying to comfort her. But the water dripping on the side of her neck told a different story, he wept for his family too. She fell asleep when he started to hum a tune to her.

Oddly Velf remembered the tune well, it was a lullaby, the same one her mother had sung to every child she had nursed.

Velf opened her eyes and looked gloomily at the setting sun outside the cave. Night was coming and she was hungry. Her stomach growled, hardly dignified for a vampire! But Velf had been a drifter for a long time, she was used to hunger. She was not above sucking on mice and rats if she had too.

Velf stretched and yawned, it was time to wake up. She picked at her dirt encrusted nails; she needed a bath soon too. Maybe a raid on the local city was in order. She needed to get clean and rest in one place for a few days. Beastmaster vampires were tough, but even a hermit of a vamp like herself liked the easy existence of the city life every now and again.

She would pick her target carefully of course, no sense in rushing in. Find some b*****d of an overlord who treated his people like dirt... make him the first meal and the people would then be unlikely to revolt against her. In a few days she would be gone and the people could wait for the next despot to take over their sector.

A win-win situation as far as Velf was concerned. Velf stood and scratched her head. Her hair was matted and tangled. She sneered at herself. She was a mess! How did she let herself get into such a state! Sometimes Velf wished she had ended up in a brothel. At least she would have been fed rather than having to hunt and she would have been able to bathe and have new clothes more than once a decade.

But a brothel was not were she ended up. The bandits decided on a place to sell their chattel, both human and none human. Both she and her brave boy had to walk for days in the deep snow. They were given stolen furs to wear so they did not freeze. Hands still bound and tied to each other they had trudged through the winter storms. When one fell the other would help them back up before a bandit struck them for idleness. When Velf’s hands were so frost bitten that they bled the boy gave her strips of his fur cape to bind around her hands. They were both mountain children and knew how to survive in the cold, but even for them a few furs and meagre rations were not enough, they began to weaken. Their captors despaired; they should only have taken one slave, not two. One would have been easier to keep alive on the long journey to the city.

The boy got an infection in his chest. When he could no longer walk for coughing Velf carried him. But even this was not enough for the bandits. The boy was slowing them down and in carrying him she would weaken herself and lower her value. They had argued long and hard over what to do. In the end they decided that it would be better to feed one strong slave well, rather than stretch the rations between them and end up wasting food on a slave that would probably die. The city was still days away on foot and they were passing through dangerous territory. They wanted to get a good price for their goods so they could stay in the city the rest of the winter and go raiding again in the summer when it would be more profitable. They decided to leave the boy behind, he could be used as monster bait.

Velf remembered how they abandoned him; they tied him up and left him by the road side. If they were lucky the live flesh would keep any predators in the area away for at least one night. Let them have the fun of killing the boy! They may even get infected by whatever sickness he had.

Velf had docilely done as she had been told so far because she had a comrade, someone who was enduring with her, someone of her own people. She could have endured everything if he had been with her, but now he too was going to die... the last of her village.

When the bandits pulled her away she heard a loud noise. It was rather shrill and irritating. It took her minutes to realise she was making the noise and she was screaming her lungs out. She bit, tore and scratched at the men that carried her away from her friend. They slapped her as they dragged her way. But it made no difference, she kept screaming... they hit her harder and split her lip, she widened the split by opening her mouth more and screaming harder.

They could not do this! Did they not understand that he was all she had left? Why did they want to strip her of all that she had loved? What had she done to deserve such a fate?

The leader shoved his fur mitten covered hand into her mouth to quieten her.

“Silence you little whore!” he hissed. He cursed when she clamped her teeth together, he pulled his hand away and backhanded her, then dropped her. She fell to the snow, dizzy for a moment. “Be quiet or you will draw some foul thing down on us!” he warned.

“Too late,” drawled a smooth accented voice she did not recognise.

Again Velf’s memory was sketchy from that point. She remembered the smell of blood again and the pristine white snow turning red. The men screamed, harder than she had and their screams were cut off by gurgles. She lifted her head and squinted through the swirling snow. A black shadow materialised out of the white. It moved soundlessly, hips swaying. It did not sink into the deep snow but rather walked on top of it. As it came closer features became clear. Midnight, black hair that fell below its waist. Eyes, red from feeding, skin almost as pale as the snow. The creature was wearing a corset and long skirt, it did not appear to be bothered by the cold at all.

The most disturbing thing however where the long white canines that peeped at Velf when the creatures blood stained lips turned up into a smile.

“Hello little bite,” its husky voice drawled.

Velf was convinced that she was looking at her death, she was about to be eaten by a vampire. She waited for the beautiful creature to attack her. However, the colour drained from the vampires eyes, leaving behind a piercing purple. The beautiful female looked down at herself.

“DAMN IT!” she squealed in a very un-vampire like way. “Another perfectly good corset ruined! That’s the last time I ever go on a diet! It makes me crazy and then I go out and binge drink!”

Velf thought she may possibly be already dead, either that or insane. The vampire was not even looking at her now; she was trying to wipe the red stains from her pink satin corset.

“That does it, its leather for me from now on!” complained the creature. “Durable and easy to wipe bandit blood off.” Velf tried to sit up. The female moved so quickly that she blurred in Velf’s vision. Her face appeared out of no where, now inches from Velf’s.

“So... what shall I do with you my little bite?” she asked. “I’m not hungry anymore...” she frowned. “They were taking you to be sold weren’t they?” asked the creature. Velf nodded mutely. “They must have been desperate,” snorted the vampire as she stood up gracefully. “They would not get much for a scrawny bag of bones like you. You’re not worth me sucking on.”

Velf blinked. Suddenly she was furious. After everything that had happened to her she was being mocked by a vampire that did not even have the decency to end her existence.

“Do... do... you a... always ...p...play with your food like t...this?” asked Velf between shivers. The vampire stared at her for a moment, violet eyes wide. Then she threw back her head and laughed.

It was the most beautiful and most terrible sound Velf had ever heard.

“Child you amuse me,” she chuckled. She crouched down again and looked at Velf, her violet eyes almost kind.

“Poor little bite,” she said softly. “All lost and alone, what will become of you now?” Velf shrugged, she neither knew or cared.

“I did not kill all of those bandits,” said the vampire casually. “Two got away while I was eating.” Again Velf shrugged, what did that matter to her? She was going to die anyway, vampire food or the cold, it did not matter.

“Do you hate them little bite?” asked the vampire, her smooth voice strangely enticing. Velf could not help nodding; she did hate them they had taken her family and home from her. Even her brave friend was out there in the cold somewhere. He was probably already dead because of those men and their greed. She felt the hot anger rise in her, she did hate them.

The vampire smiled.

“Yes, I see you do...” she said softly. Suddenly she pressed something into Velf’s hand.

“The contents of the tube you hold nearly killed the human race,” announced the vampire with a feral grin. “Nano-bots have cursed many and blessed a few.” The vampire stood and her face became serious. “In your hand are nano’s from my own blood. If you swallow them there is a 50% chance that they will kill you.” She turned and walked away but called over her shoulder. “If you survive however, you will become more powerful than you ever imagined. You will be able to exact your revenge on those you deem fit.”

The vampire vanished in the snow.

Velf grinned in the gathering gloom of the cave. She did not even know the vampires name... but she must have known the path the girl she left in the snow would choose. Velf was dead on her own anyway, but she had the chance to live, not only live but to give bloody justice to her family and her brave friend.

She had taken the vile of black blood and swallowed it with only a slight hesitation.

Her first hunt began a few hours later. With her new senses she tracked down the remaining bandits. She did not kill them quickly, she broke their legs and drank her fill from them, but she left them alive to writhe in agony. The local wolves would take care of them. For a first hunt it had been exhilarating, but she had felt empty after.

She forced herself to retrace her steps and go looking for the frozen body of her friend. It was easy to track him; his smell was still all over her. Funny, she had not realised how good he had smelled as a mortal. She did not want to face his dead body, or rather what the predators would have left of it. But he deserved a proper burial, in the tradition of his people.

But when she returned to where she had been separated from him there was nothing. He was gone. She dug under the fresh snow and found blood, lots of it. Blood tinted tears had poured from her eyes and she had mourned her friend until the sun began to rise. She instinctively knew she couldn’t stay in the daylight, the urge to find shelter overpowered her grief. But before she left she lowered herself to the maroon coloured snow and licked at the patch of frozen blood.

His blood was the most delicious she had tasted that night and she had never encountered anything in the 521 years since that was as sweet. But her nose picked up something else with the blood. An odour... dog? No wolf... the wolves had probably dragged his body away.

Velf straightened her clothes and stepped out of the cave she had spent the day in. The night would be balmy and warm. The perfect night for an easy hunt, smells carried better on the moist air. There was nothing tasty near, a few antelope and she could hear distant frogs singing in a swamp about a mile away. Her eyes were drawn to the vast city sprawling along the valley floor. Only certain sections of it were inhabited, electric lights burning brightly. The rest was dark and derelict. A relic from before the war.

Velf sighed, so to the city it was.

She would not stay long, there were too many of her own kind there for her liking. She preferred the solitary life and wanted to stay out of the intrigue and politics that governed the city. She also did not want to die, there were many powerful vampires there that would easily best her.

Little did she know that her stay in the city would be much longer than she anticipated.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

That is it for now, think I caught most of the typos but if there are more mistakes I am sorry.

Had fun writing this, it saved me from watching a James Bond film!

Love and hugs to all ;-)

2) The Ambush.

The city stank. Old blood, mixed with rotting meat, refuse and sewage. Velf gagged on it. How could vampires live here? What could possibly be so great about this relic of a city that it would keep creatures with such sensitive noses in the midst of such filth? But she knew the answer.

Humans.

There were humans here by the million, perilously clinging to the decayed decadence of the old world. Velf really thought mortals stupid. The old days would never come back, so why live with the constant reminder of them? But then again it was a lot easier to defend the thick walled concrete shells that were left standing than a small village or town out in the open. Velf’s tribe had learned that lesson the hard way. They had paid the price for trying to live freely. Here humans had protection in numbers and in the form of the vampires who ruled large areas of the city. What bandit would attack humans marked by a powerful vampratic clan? The humans kept the vampires fed, either with animal blood or with prisoners from other districts that they raided. Raids happened daily. A vampire that did not fight to protect their humans could even find their human slaves/servants would defect to other districts.

It all seemed like far too much effort to Velf. She would rather live in the wastes and take her chances. She had little comprehension or understanding of politics. She just wanted a bath and a place to rest. The city was her best option. She had little time to think about the pitiful conditions and petty squabbling of her fellow vampires anyway. She was on a hunt. Summer nights were short and she had been skulking around the area for a week, carefully choosing a target.

Tonight she would strike. Balthazar the man called himself. He was a fat wobbling monstrosity of a human. Velf may have to open a leg artery to bleed him as he had no neck she could see. He ate whole sheep carcasses every night while his people hunted in the vast rubbish tips that surrounded the city for junk they could sell for food. He did not appear to have many people with him anyway. Most with the means to had left, only the old, young and poor remained. Velf had found the brothel yesterday. As it was almost her fate she always checked the state of the brothels when she was thinking of an ambush. The girls were well used and hungry. They were more willing if they knew that the amount they would get fed would depend on how many customers they had.

There was one lovely boy there too who had obviously just been sold into the life. He reminded Velf strongly of her youngest brother and her gut had twisted in sympathy. It had been then she had finally decided that Balthazar would die. The man was incompetent and downright ugly. She had heard it whispered while listening to the brothel girls that the young boys that were brought in were Balthazar’s favourites. They never lasted long.

Velf bared her teeth at the thought. She would kill her prey slow and enjoy it. Call her old fashioned but the person at the top was supposed to look after his people. The headman of her tribe worked tirelessly to ensure that his people all got along and that everyone had full bellies. Her target was making things very easy for her. The people would not fight her for killing him and a few acts of mercy on her part would ensure she was provided for and would not be bothered while she stayed. In a few days she would melt into the night and the people could wait to see who would take over their dilapidated district. Even by city standards it was a fairly poor area.

She crouched low to the ground and listened. She was next to a tower block that had been converted to the overlord’s palace. Such a man must have some powerful friends to not have had his district taken. All the more reason to be gone in a few days and not stick around. Her delicately pointed ears picked up the movement of the few staff still awake this late. Velf smiled, few witnesses about to spread panic.

Velf was the name she had given to herself. Being an immortal her old human name that she now could not remember had not really fitted her. She had not been in a very imaginative mood. She had elf-like pointed ears and she was a vampire. Velf. Simple and easy to remember for her nano-bot infected brain.

She grinned impishly to herself as she got ready for her ambush. Quick and stealthy was the key. Most fights she had ever been in had been over in 10 minutes. The anticipation of the hunt was better than actually getting fed. There was a little electric tingle that would run up her spine and it was wonderful! It made her shudder. She knew her fangs would be lengthening and her eyes turning read with bloodfrenzy. She licked her lips and sprang.

She landed awkwardly on a window ledge 4 stories up. She teetered on it slightly, arms windmilling a little before she got her balance back. She glanced around hoping no one had seen her graceless landing.

Sh** someone had!

There was a woman in the next street. She was looking directly at Velf on her precarious perch. Velf winced and waited for the woman to start screaming for guards. She had been detected and she would have to make a quick get away. But the woman merely shrugged her shoulders and trudged on, loaded down with some rotten looking firewood.

“I can certainly feel the love and affection people have for this man,” muttered Velf.

She decided she was not agile enough for another leap. Her nimble fingers found joints in the brick work and she scaled the building with only a few mishaps, mainly grazed toes. She really needed to start wearing shoes. She pulled herself up to the flat roof and landed silently. Using her nails she pulled up a few tiles on the roof and made a small hole. She slipped into the roof cavity. She crawled along the ancient beams and rusted steel supports. Her nostrils flared. He was close. He did not smell particularly nice, not like the boy from her tribe had all those years ago. Then again no human had ever smelled as good as he did, or tasted as sweet. If he had survived she may have sucked him dry, so perhaps his death was a good thing. She shook her head, she did not want to be dragged into her tragic past. She had a district to take over.

She wiggled through the tight roof space until she could hear his heart beat. He was just below her. She took a deep breath and released it slowly, then counted to ten. She needed to be absolutely sure he was alone, there was no point killing more than she needed to. She would get fat.

Nothing, just the sound of his snoring.

With a little chuckle she smashed a fist through the ceiling under her and slithered through the hole she made. She landed lightly on all fours, the dust and debris littering the air did not deter her. She did not need her eyes to locate the now bellowing fat man. She pounced. When she got hold of him she realised he was twice her size and did indeed have no neck. Not a problem she ignored his girlish shrieks for mercy and threw him onto his front. She manoeuvred him into a tight head lock, cutting off his wails. But she let him breathe, no point killing him just yet. She snatched at one of his supporting hands and slammed his wrist into her fangs.

It was not her most enjoyable feed. Sometimes the sensation of hot blood slipping down her throat would bring her close to euphoria. But this blood had a lot of cholesterol and alcohol in it. He was the fried food of the vampire world, easy to obtain as he was too fat to run away, certainly filling, but the taste left a lot to be desired, she would need to feed again before the night was over just to get his flavour out of her mouth. She would have to brush her fangs before she slept too. The breath in the man faltered and his heart slowed. Velf spat his wrist out and made a face. He collapsed to his ruined bed, eyes unseeing, breath gone, she heard his heart stop. She poked her tongue out in distaste. He was naked.

That was when she heard the thudding heart beat behind her. She whirled around to find a terrified maid standing frozen in the door. Though judging from the way she was dressed Velf guessed her services here were not of the cleaning kind. Velf straightened and wiped her mouth. She was a messy feeder, which reminded her that her clothes had more than one old blood stain on them.

“I am Velf,” she said to the petrified woman. “I will be staying here for a while. I need a bath and fresh clothes.” The woman just stared at her, shaking so much that her fishnet stockings were starting to sag at her ankles. Velf toyed with the idea of eating the woman too but she would probably taste a bit of the man she had been with. Velf wanted no more of his bitter taste on her tongue.

She relaxed and let the feeding light fade from her eyes.
“I won’t hurt you women,” she announced. “He’s dead now; he’ll never bother you again.” The woman fell to her knees, clasping her hands in an attitude of prayer.
“H... have...you come to liberate us?” she asked in a shaky but hopeful whisper.

That was when it all started going wrong for Velf.
