Question about deffence on necro

Hello. In need some help. Can some explain me how works def??

I got 2 items. Both got +30 def but in effects one got +20, and second +28. Why when i wear this items my def doesnt change??

And second question how works Apprentice sufix?? +...% to def but what exactly def? Cos i dont think its + % to whole def. Maybe its for the main def??

Effects: AGILITY +17, TOUGHNESS +5, defence -2, all weapons damage +8, chance for critical hit +14 %, dodge melee +12
Requirements: STRENGTH: 28, LEVEL: 30, CHARISMA: 10
Selling price: 23 250 Lgo

here is 6.

even apprentice says +XXX%, the total def of item is included in Defence: XX in the stats. it is +% def of the item.
