Surprisingly no-one has started a thread on this yet, so i thought i would.

Anyone got any thoughts on it? Winners, dark horses etc etc?

Personally, i think Spain will win, but if i was a betting man, my money would be on Argentina, i can see a bit of Maradonna magic rubbing off on the players (even if everything in qualifying points the other way).

As for underdogs, i can see Serbia or Ghana being the surprise package, with one of them making it to the semis.

Ultimately, it will be a good few weeks of drunken fun, and as long as England or France don't do well (sorry, but the Henry handball will never be forgiven), i'll be happy.

I do expect backlash for being in the ABE (Anyone But England) club, but keep it friendly banter ;-)

I'm with you on this one. I don't really give a damn about football and I expect every conversation I have with my friends for the next few weeks to be incredibly boring. Yep, i can see Holland being in the final, having booted Brazil on the way there.

Maradonna... the great enigma. He's either a genius or an idiot, it's hard to tell which at times, but i do fancy Argentina to pull it off in spite of him.

As for Slovakia, they have a pretty good chance of making it out of the group stages, provided they can get a result against Paraguay and i fancy them to hold Italy to a draw, New Zealand should be a walk-over. Can't see them making it beyond the last 16 though as Holland 'should' be the team they meet (Nouveau's crystal ball sees all).

If Drogba gets fit in time they might make an impact, but as you say, the draw really didn't do them any favours, if they dont get a result against Portugal their tournament is as good as over.

spain HAVE to win this, id love if they they didnt and the world cup came to england where it belongs, but there is no team out there even close to spain in terms of pure ability, dark horses i think could be teams like potugal, argentina and also maybe england, team that are not really expected past the semis could sneak up and win it

also being possibly the most patriotic person to every breath i am somewhat offended by all this ABE nonsense, but as cesarz states its all in "friendly" banter (talk about a loose term LOL) so i wont be a killjoy and cry about it, ill just rub it in everyones faces when steven gerrard lifts the cup Big Grin

That's a pretty big claim, and one that's highly contested. Truth is no-one knows who 'invented' football, it has it's origins in a lot of ancient games. England was the first to set down some form of codified rules.

And the whole point of the thread is for a bit of lively banter about the World Cup, not just who will win.

Mexico are impressing so far in the current game :-)

Well they're in with a good chance of making it out of their group, especially if Argentina self-implode under Maradonna's (mis)guidance, and they can beat Nigeria.

After that though, they'd be up against it, they wont have the home support they had at the euros, that's why i fancy Ghana. Decent team, and will get plenty of support, which can make a hell of a difference as the Greece example, and South Korea reaching the semis in 2002 World Cup, shows.

I hope this isn't counted as a multi, as it's a new day, and it's a new subject matter.

C'MON THE ROBERT GREEN!!!! Doing the nation proud Big Grin Watching that goal reminded me of Eddie the Eagle.
