Well, I think that "merge list V2" should stay as it still helps a lot of players, including me. My idea is to help on quick merges and organization of the items. The thread "Merge List V2" is to help you on what you have merge to have an special item. That's why I think my idea and what you two completely different things.

Not really useful. You'll look into the merge lists anyway, eg.
You have 4 items, A, B, X, Y.
You merge the items accordingly:
A + B = C
X + Y = Z
There's no way you can check what does C + Z make, therefore you'll look into the merge list.

In the situation, you have items A, B, C.
You want to see the following:
A + B = X.
X + C = Y.
The proposed update would save you entirely from looking into the MV2.

It's to save time. The "Custom Items Sets" were made to save time and make the game easier to manage, so, why not what I suggested?
You have the following items
A, B and C
You can merge A + B = D and want to see what would the result of the merge of D + C would be, that's where my idea come.

There are similar programs made atm by players to check merges.
There was one on this server, but it started doing weird things and breachin computer security so Evan removed it.
There's another one, but it's in Polish, and not all the merges are correct (in my experience).
Anyways, this should be something done by those determined and skilled enough to want to know. I don't think it should be a requisite of the game as it's just one less thing to do then.
Would it make life easier? Probably, but if they keep making things easier, there's a greater sense of boredom.
I get lost in merges for hours, working out many different paths for consideration. As a result, i've managed to make some quite nice gear out of some pretty mundane items.
If this was implemented, then it would take away one more part of the game where you have to apply yourself to achieve success, and it would become another automated boredom.

I think it's a brilliant idea, and it would make life a lot easier, but tbh I don't think it's entirely needed..

Custom sets were made to relieve the server from the stress of people changing gear too often (basically nearly every player). Your idea will only increase the lag and as abovementioned, it can be easily done manually.
Btw. I'm in the middle of creating a web version of the merge list V2.
