This happened before in the 1000's.
The brightest one recorded yielded this result:

Polar months.. Northern Sweden and Norway have those issues,where it's constant sun for 6 months... After those 6 months pass,it's darkness time!

I like the night time, having day time for weeks on end would kill me. Well, not literally but I'd be hiding in my house in the dark by day 3...haha.
On the Mayan thing: I could so see them just stopping because they figured they would live to see 2012 anyway. Or simply for the reason it would freak someone out. I know I would.
And...I'd pay to see someone eat their hat...lol
