I'm only eighteen and even I feel a pang at this...
Iron Maiden are retiring soon
Judas Priest say they will only do another album
Metallica lost it at St. Anger, if their new album is awful then they have had it
Megadeth are just disssapearing
The four HUGE names in metal, the inspirations to them all nowadays are going, after years of raining hell even Slayer are going to call quits soon...
I feel like crying....
I mean Iron Maiden are what inspired Cradle of Filth, strange as it sounds, they idolise them, just Dannii can't sing, though I don't like cradle of filth...
Anyone else feel sad about all this, the forefront of metal is fading leaving us with sucky bands like Madina lake and My Chemical Romance as the forerunners :S
Though Dragonforce have at least picked up from the main names.

Rock is also great... except Queen... indie sucks... hip hop is awful now... dance has no real point listening to for leasure...

Three days grace i don't really like anymore. Disturbed, well they are jsut awesome with monkey noises
It's mainly power metal and heavy metal, though I see the thrash. Need come children of bodom on there still
Primal fear are awesome, listen to seven seals, it's meaningful.
By christian you mean Fireball ministry and Pillar then?
Hammerfall are far from thrash
But yeh anyone crying about the loss of htese influential figures?

Fireball minsitry are too.
Thrash.
Well. Megadeth, Metallica, Machine Head, Trivium (Also Metalcore, so sora in out), Slayer.
Power
Dragonforce, Hammerfall, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Primal Fear.
Heavy
All the above, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden.
There's more, but they are what most would know. And if you lsiten to it they don't overpower them, listen to Visions by Judas Priest, you'll like it I reckon... also Prophecy by them as well.
They are from the new album. The main reason it used to sound like that was because of how it was recorded (I'm a vocalist for a metal band, was in a few, but left two of them, and founded this one)

Testament are a shadow of those bamds.
Fear Facory annoy me, minly because I do not like Tim 'The Ripper' Owens that much, he was in Judas Priest and did Painkiller, which I hated until they redid it with halford. He ruined Iced Earth because his voice didn't suit, thank God Matt Barlowe came back.
Also Demondude, how often is metal played on the radio? Even kerrang would rather play indie now, because it's popular. I keep the faith, but metal is dying and we can't stop it... with the four greats dissapearing. Manowar nearly gone and Anthreax dissapeared ages ago we are screwed.
I have to find the bands through specialist connections, last year I could simply go to Kerrang and look them up, they just don't bother anymore... all we hear about is BLOODY TRIVIUM! I saw them, they aren't that great.

Demondude I read last issue of metal hammer where they proclaimed themselves that metal was dying.
Believe me all of those you list are genric metal, I do not like that so much... most of them are aoverrated. Can't stand mudvane.
Try these Kulexis Crysiniun, Korpiklaani, Turisas, Amon Amarth.
I look harder than most, and still I find it all drying up, when Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth and Judas Priest throw in the towel, I may give up on musinc all together... there is very little decent left that I don't already have all the cd's to. I do not like Death and Black metal very much because all the bands today sound the bloody same, the only ones worth it are harder to find because they don't have the generic sound...
And Kerrang was not always awful. Like I said, I found out about Vortin Forests in there, and they kick the stuffing out of Lamb of God

Welll Cradle are awful anyway. If you want black or death metal look elsewhere.
But look who is popular, the Great Gods of Metal are being replaced with Madina Lake, and MCR all awful whingy emo bands, they are just useless. That's what metal is now, it's dying, I have realised it though i hate the fact, but even metal hammer are now rating many awful, untalented bands ads good.

Problem is that my favourite Metal is where you have the most awesome vocalists over the top of perfect constructions. I love bands like Gamma Ray and Helloween, Hammerfall, Dragonforce. But they don't compare to early metallica, Maegadeth, JP and Maiden... though I do also like female vocals
Problem I have is that apart from a few (In Flames, Children Of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Shadowsfall) there are a couple of others, but apart from them Death metal is all the friggin same nowadays.
I am probably the last person people wopuld expect to admit metal is on the way out, but it's going that way. Though a band or two have resaprked me hopes, Airbourne and Kiuas.
It sounds stupid but the only way to ressurect metal properly is to bring back glam

the problem is that all metal nowadays has not diversified, these bands really kicked metal off, but Glam was definately the forerunner, Look at KISS and W.A.S.P. If W.A.S.P didn't exist we would not have Children of Bodom.
Emo is far from dying, do you realise that it has nearly overtaken Chav, and indie just swamps the hell outta everything else... five years ago I could say METAL WILL LIVE FOREVER, now I am not so sure, modern bands all go for one of two sounds now, Crap Screaming (Cradle of Filth beign the fathers of that :S) and Off Key Vocals. You do not get perfectly copnstructed melodis anymore, my arguements to other people that metal has talent aren't as strong anymore... it is just how it is, much to my distaste.
Hence why I am really pushing my band now, because we are so close to getting a deal, if we can get in we will remind people of what metal is really about.

It's sad that Iron Maiden is going to retired.... They are deeply in my hearth since that was my first band that i sarted to listen metal.

@Raxis - dude do not stress about it & don't pay any attention to what the knobjockeys who write for amgs like Kerrang, MetalHammer & alike say. Metal will never die.
Yes it will suck for a time, but it will come back. Dude, I was a teenage in the 80's, Maiden, Motorhead, Sabbath, ACDC, were my idols (esp Sabbath - they rule still!). But back then we got f***ed in the ears, cos the charts were suddenly full of crap like BonJovi & Poison (c***s).
Anyway; what did true metal-heads do...? They created thrash - Metallica, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Nirvana, & many more stood up & said "F**k this lame-arsed glam-rock shite, here's some real meta!"
So, the message is, don't despair, metal will find a way - it always does. 
Just keep listening to the good shit & ignore crap.
At the moment I'm listening to Down (awesome), Airbourne (the new ACDC), and am revisiting the Foo Fighters. Nice.

Nirvana have NEVER been called metal, they are grunge.
And Glam-rock kicks the stuffing outta most thrash, because most thrash is boring nowadays. And actually thrash was created due to punk, where people couldn't sing, so thrash was the next step where people could half sing
Metal needs Glam to come back, and since everyone is opposed to it then it won't.

Dude - I wasn't arguing with you... just saying that metal won't die & telling you what I was listening to at the moment.
And you don't have to teach me what the different types of "genres" are for bands or music, or how they originated. I wasn't making a statement that Nirvana were thrash, I was just pointing out the progression & reaction of sub-culture music to the main-stream.
Metal does not need a return to glam! It needs to step away form the over-produced crap, and get back to bare-bones gritty hard rock.... ah, I'm going to listen to some Sabbath, that always cheers me up.

Sabbat hare good. But Glam is definately necessary, because it is what inspired so many of the bands which we know and mildly love, without it metal would be nowhere.

I forgot to say, Demondude, I can't stand how much thrash there is about, I saw Machine Head live for God's sakes. There is too much, and it's all mediocre.
What I really will miss is Maiden and Priest, perfect vocals, melodic guitars, the whole contstruct which only comes from true heavy metal, hopefully going to see Dio before he packs it in

Only like the oldies. My favourite band are Gamma Ray, started end of eighties and were ahead of their time, then hammerfall 1997, Dragonforce 2000... none that old really. I prefer older metal because at least they can sing.
Yes Maachine Head were AWFUL live, I love Burn My Eyes and The Blackening, I can easily beat Robb Flynn at the shouting and vocals, heck even he said it when I met him leaving the place. It's easy, I like challenging metal, and it just doesn't really exist anymore, the bands that really got it going are dying, though I was surprised that Def Lepard and Whitesnake are still going, their new stuff is awesome.
But yeh, metal is dying, I never said dead, you are right it will never be dead, but it will die, less people will listen to it, and as for the emo's I was at work yesterday and there were more emo's than people shopping, and I work at Tesco's

I prefer the bands which try to make a buck or two, cos they put on damn good shows. The ones who aren't interested are always boring to watch. I don't like Terrorizer either, because it is too focused on the doom group of metal... I like melody as well.
Best album I have this year is Nostradamus by Judas Priest, in reviews it got slated, yet it is perfect for a concept album, the right balance of melody, slower and faster paced songs, and brilliant instrumentals.
Band I have been keeping an eye on for years are apocalyptica, as soon as they got famous they got awful comparitively.

I'm going to ignore that. Iron Maiden are most definately metal, and are you therefore saying that metallica are useless, or Megadeth, or Judas Priest, because if so you are in a huge minority.
You may as well say Def Leppard aren't metal when they were the first ever Heavy Metal band. Metal isn't all about screaming, the main defining point is the tuning on the guitars, and the distortion. Iron Maiden fill perfectly into metal

It still is. Metal has many Genres, a few too many for my liking, Industrial is basically nu metal without hip hop.
Now htne, Iron Maiden are still metal, they are called it by all magazines, all shops and the lot. You've lost this one, Iron Maiden are British Heavy Metal, that is their official genre notice the HEAVY METAL there.
